Xiamen is located in southeastern coastal region in China, southeast of Fujian Province, at the mouth of Jiulong River, with its back to Zhangzhou and Quanzhou plains, and it is close to Taiwan Strait. The whole coastline twists and turns with the total length of 234km. The port is perennially ice-free with broad estuary and deep water, so it is a natural port with excellent conditions just like a strait.
